Hundreds of South Alego residents yesterday thronged Ting’wang’i health centre for free medical care, courtesy of an American non-governmental organization and the office of the Alego / Usonga MP, Samuel Atandi.

According to the residents, the medical camp came in handy, at a time when many cannot afford the cost of medication, thanks to the confusion bedevilling the transition from the National Health Insurance fund to the Social Health Insurance Fund that has seen many turned away from hospitals that demand cash payment.

The day long activity saw the organization, Mercy and Love Foundation’s medical personnel offer services on ailments such as high blood pressure, diabetes, eye and dental services.  The director of Mercy and love foundation, Dr. Mercy Otieno said they are on a mission to advocate for access to quality healthcare for the less fortunate.

She said that they intend to traverse the country and African continent in future but had started with Nyanza region owing to poor health outcomes.  A member of the medical team, Dr. Barry Bekhan said medical camps provide opportunity for sharing of knowledge with medical students and also provision of quality health care for those who cannot afford.

During the occasion, the team donated medicine and other kits to the health facility. Residents, led by the Ting’wang’i health centre chairman, Charles Ndolo and former councillor, Eric Awadhi hailed the NGO and the office of the Alego – Usonga MP, Samuel Atandi for organizing the camp.

Awadhi, who was one of the beneficiaries of the dental and eye clinics, said he was able to get an eye glass and had the aching teeth sorted.
