Government requires close to Sh37.3 billion to repair the roads and bridges that were washed away by the heavy rains.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen says the transport network was damaged by the flash floods in October and December last year and those that were destroyed by El Nino rains in the months of March, April and May.
The CS said KeRRA will require Sh 18.5 billion to repair rural roads while KURA Sh 9.1 billion for urban roads as KeNHA takes an allocation of Sh 9.7 billion for the restoration of the destroyed highways.
“The restoration of the damage to infrastructure has begun despite lack of the budgetary allocation,” said the CS when he addressed Director Generals Kungu Ndungu (KeNHA), George Kinoti (Kenya Urban Roads Authority, KURA), Philemon Kandie (Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) and Rashid Mohamed (Kenya Roads Boards).
