Ruth Odinga Empowers Community Savings Groups

Kisumu Women Representative Ruth Odinga in partnership with a non-governmental organization KMET has sensitized youth and women groups in Nyalenda A ward in Kisumu County on matters regarding savings and steering savings groups.

The chairperson of youth, women and the elderly in Kisumu Women Representative Office Grace Jobita disclosed that the women rep’s office has been running such a program targeting the various community groups where Sunday, they met over 50 such groups in Nyalenda A ward in Kisumu County

“We have come to Nyalenda A ward in Kowino market in a drive to sensitize the women and youth groups including those in the boda boda sector on ways of saving to enable them invest in business and this we have done in the entire Kisumu County and now for the first time we have come to Nyalenda, where we have over 50 groups who have joined in the training and we will empower them with startup capital of between Sh100, 000 to Sh150,000 startup capital depending on the strength as a group,” she said.

Jobita reiterated that Kisumu Women Rep has lived to her pre-election pledge of empowering women through tabling money openly on the table and dividing equally and transparently to the local development groups and ensuring that the locals have money in their pockets to develop and steer their respective development groups.

The officer representing KMET, Christal Sheila on her part disclosed that the overriding factor, why they have partnered with the office of the Women Rep is to enlighten the residents on matters health, especially on reproductive health even as they sensitize the locals on matters savings.

“We have come to ensure that women are well informed about their sexual reproductive health and how to make decisions as regards to the same and how to attain that autonomy as women to make such critical decisions and we have a heavy component that we focus on which is gender and livelihood and we want to ensure that each and every gender is able to experience and have equal opportunities,” pointed Sheila.

The local residents hailed the initiative by the women representative on the sensitization, which they noted helped enlighten them on matters savings and sexual reproductive health and how to propel their community development initiatives.
