Ruto meets KMPDU officials days after doctors strike was called off

Health stakeholders under the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union-(KMPDU) held a meeting with President William Ruto.

In the meeting in State House, Ruto said the government will continually engage stakeholders in the health sector, including health workers’ unions, focusing at promoting industrial harmony and long-lasting solutions to the challenges.

The head of state emphasised that the doctors and other healthcare workers must learn to live within their means.

“While the right to engage in industrial action is protected by the Constitution and labour laws and regulation, it should be exercised responsibly, with due regard to the wellbeing of the public,” said Ruto.

The KMPDU officials led by its Secretary General Dr Davji Atellah said they are committed to championing and supporting the universal Health Care (UHC) programmes.

“We are also advocating for the introduction of Social health insurance for the benefit of the citizens,” he said.  In the meeting were Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha, head of Public Service Felix Kosgei among others.

The doctors’ strike that lasted for 48 days impacted negatively on the sick as they sought for implementation of Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA) which was signed eight years ago.
