The Sabatia Eye Hospital organized a medical Camp at Sinoko Ward in Likuyani providing treatment to over 200 locals with eye ailments. The Hospital also identified 60 patients with critical eye ailments who have been booked for further treatment including eye cataract surgery at the facility for free.
The Hospital conducted the medical camp at the Josefina Arthritis Centre in Sinoko in partnership with the Lions Club International among other individual and corporate partners. A medic at the Hospital Edwin Simiyu said that during medical camps, they screen to identify the silent diseases that often go unnoticed and are neglected but still affect the communities.
Simiyu said many people in the society experience vision loss due to cataracts promising to support treatment of the vulnerable. The Head teacher of Matunda School for the Visually impaired Nelly Khainga urged parents of children who are visually impaired to take them for medication and also ensure they attend school.
“We have reached out to some children who are totally blind and they are being hidden in their homes, and these parents do not know that these eye problems ranging from low vision to those who are totally blind can still go to school,” she added.
The Director of Josefina Arthritis Centre Thomas Bifwoli said that the medical camp is part of bigger plans at the Centre to support the society in managing diseases that become expensive to treat when they remain untreated for long. “We are trying to bring experts and specialists to offer treatment to the community to manage conditions which are sometimes costly for them,” he added.
