Mpesa Foundation and the Safaricom Foundation have embarked on an infrastructure improvement project in a primary school in Homa Bay County at a cost Sh40 million. The two organizations are undertaking the project at Ober Primary School in Kabondo Kasipul Constituency.

Safaricom Foundation Chairman Joseph Ogutu said the project encompasses construction of modern classrooms for Early Childhood Education (ECDE), Primary and Junior Secondary sections in the school. He said it also involves construction of a computer laboratory, an ablution block, modern latrines, modern kitchen and a new gate.

He added that the funds would also be used to renovate the administration block and install two energy efficient jikos as well as the fencing of the school compound. Ogutu who joined Kabondo Kasipul MP Eve Obara to launch the project yesterday said the project would be completed by June next year.

The Chairman said they were going to equip the school with a laboratory of 40 computers to enable the students to become digitally literate. “We want to promote digital knowledge in this school by purchasing and installing computers connected to the internet. M-PESA Foundation and Safaricom Foundation are committed to ensuring students in this school become Information and Communication Technology (ICT) literate,” Ogutu said.

He said the project would also enable the students to learn in a conducive environment. “We want the children to learn in a clean environment. It is important to protect children from communicable diseases,” Ogutu added.

Dr Obara said that the project would enhance the digital economy of the country. “The economy of our country and the world is going digital. The computers which are going to be installed in this school will equip our learners with digital skills which will enable them to do online jobs and other ICT related opportunities,” Dr Obara said.

She expressed optimism that the new infrastructure would attract more enrollment and transform education in the locality.
