Special Needs Education national sports championships kicked off in Kericho County on Friday. Speaking while officially opening the 23rd anniversary ceremony, the Head of Special Needs Education Fred Haga said the event showcases sporting prowess and a celebration of determination of inclusion spirit of special needs learners.
Haga observed that sports enhanced a holistic development of learners and an opportunity for physical exercise which is essential for maintaining health and well-being. The Director noted that sports enhanced skills in teamwork, leadership, discipline and perseverance among participants with a positive impact to self and community.
He called for learners with disabilities to embrace sports as a career since the government has put into consideration funding for co-curricullar activities for special needs learners. He challenged parents not to hide children with disabilities but instead avail them for the opportunities available for training, employment and procurement.
He cited himself as an example of a beneficiary from disability since his parents did not hide him but instead educated him to the highest level and now he proudly heads the Directorate of Special Needs Education in the Ministry of Education. Haga emphasized that special needs sports is a talent recognized even at world cup and Olympics where with adequate training, one could become a champion.
He said school sports were a critical aspect of education where discipline was highly encouraged and colossal resources have and would be provided to make special needs sports successful.
The 23rd edition of Special Needs Education sports are categorized depending on the level of disability including visually impaired (VI) Physically Impaired (PI) Intellectually Challenged (IC) and learners living with Autism, blind and deaf and albinism.
