Residents of Moigutwo and Kaptumo sub locations in Baringo Central Sub County are counting losses after a suspected leopard mauled more than ten sheep.

Talai Location Chief Thomas Chepyegon who confirmed the incident to KNA by phone Wednesday said that the marauding wild animal which kills and removes organs was sighted by a resident near Kabirmet hill after it killed a sheep within the neighbourhood.

Chepyegon indicated that close to five households have had their animals killed by the rogue cat who has been roaming the area for some days noting that the number could rise following numerous complaints of missing livestock within the area. He said that locals are now living in fear following yesterday’s discovery of four dead sheep at Kasar village belonging to two families.

“The sheep, which include young ones, were killed at night in their enclosures when everyone was fast asleep,” said Chepyegon. The Chief stated that he has already reported the matter to Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) officials in Kabarnet town for prompt action.

He at the same time urged locals to avoid moving around at night because two years ago another leopard mauled a man from the area who succumbed to injuries and his neighbour escaped death by a whisker after sustaining serious injuries following the attack while attempting to chase away the ferocious cat from eating their livestock.
