Divisive Politics

Tharaka Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) George Murugara has asked politicians and leaders in Tharaka-Nithi County to shun from divisive politics.

The MP who also chairs the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee in Parliament noted that the county risks being divided along tribal lines, with politicians already drawing strategies for 2027 general elections.

“This is a very small county with a small population. We are at a point where our unity is at risk especially now that leaders are already declaring interests for 2027,” he said. MP Murugara highlighted that some of the leaders were already using tribe as a strategy to gain popularity, and called for unity to protect the interests of the county as a whole.

“Already, politicians are using the county’s diversity in tribe as a way of dividing residents to incline towards leaders from their own tribes. That is petty politics and bad for our unity,” the MP remarked. His statements come in the wake of the ‘One Man, One Vote, one shilling revenue sharing formula where few leaders in the county have already taken sides. shilling’

Declining to wade into the matter, the MP insisted on a unified county, joining a section of leaders who have also distanced themselves from the debate.  The MP was speaking at Muthambi Ward, at the home of Deputy Governor Wilson Nyaga Muisrael while condoling with him upon the passing on of his father.
