Three refugees killed in Kakuma Camp clash

Three asylum seekers have been confirmed dead after chaos erupted at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Turkana on Tuesday.
Authorities said refugees from two rival clans of South Sudan clashed within the camp, resulting in the deadly fight.
Yusuf Salat, the Turkana West Deputy County Commissioner said refugees from Nuer and Anyuak clans engaged in a fierce fight.  The Deputy County Commissioner confirmed that three people died following the attacks.
He said tension was still high in the refugee camp and that a contingent of police officers had been deployed to restore calm.  “Three people have died and a number of others are injured with serious cuts. The police are confirming the numbers of the injured refugees,” he said.
He said a number of refugees, fearing for their lives, had sought refuge at nearby police stations.  Kakuma Refugee Camp Manager Edwin Chabari said asylum seekers will face consequences of breaking rules and regulations.
“Action will be taken against all perpetrators or  ring leaders of the violence. Action will also be taken against refugees who will not be back in the camp before 7pm,” Chabari said.
He said the injured refugees were recovering at different hospitals in Kakuma.
