Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said victims of floods in Mathare area will be relocated to safer places to allow the schools to reopen. Gachagua said the victims will be relocated to safer places in Masinde Muliro, and Mavoko Chiefs camp as the third venue will be decided later.
“We are working with partners to ensure the victims of floods will be relocated by the Government through the support of the partners,” said the deputy president speaking in the Mathare area while he donated food stuff to the victims.
Gachagua warned Kenyans against daring nature by crossing the swollen rivers. ” The weather experts have indicated heavy rain is expected this week thus need to be careful,” said the DP.
In Laikipia county, following increased water levels in Nanyuki and Likii rivers many of the farmers have been destroyed with the residents calling for assistance. The areas affected are Likii, Ruai, Njogu ini, Mirera and Matanya where hundreds of the farmers are complaining over the massive destruction of the horticulture they expected to take to the market.
Monica Njambi calls on the government to move in a speed to clear the drainage channels.
“Most of the homes in Ruai and Mirera areas have been submerged with floods leading to destruction of household goods. Many of the children will not be reporting to school,” said Njambi.
Moses Kamau said the bridges around Nanyuki should be expanded to allow swollen rivers to pass without disrupting transport of goods along the Nanyuki Meru road.
” Heavy rains pondering in Mt Kenya forest are causing more trouble around Nanyuki town as most of the areas are flooded,” said Kamau, a matatu driver.
