Victims of mudslide, floods in Murang’a to get financial support

Governor Irungu Kang'ata leads distribution of food stuff to victims of floods and landslides at Ihura stadium on Monday.

More than 271 victims of heavy rains related to calamities in Murang’a  will be supported with cash and food supplies to help them rebuild their lives. Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata,  and Kigumo MP Joseph Munyoro disbursed cash and food stuff to the victims whose destroyed properties have been assessed by Kenya Red Cross (KRC).

The cash is part of the Murang’a County Government disaster response kitty of Sh23 million, which was disbursed to victims drawn from the sub counties of Kigumo, Kandara, Kangema and Mathioya.

Kang’ata said Murang’a has been affected by floods in the lower parts, landslides in the counties of Mathioya, Gatanga, Kangema and Gatanga that left a trail of destruction. “Those getting support from the governments are those assessed by KRC, the chiefs and the police for the transparency purpose,” said the governor at General Ihura Stadium.

In Kiganjo village in Mathioya, six people among them three children died after they were buried alive. Kigumo MP said upper parts of Murang’a have been hard hit by landslides that swept away acres of tea bushes, ruining the families’ sources of income.

“Murang’a leaders will be deliberating on how best we shall help our people to rebuild their lives,” said Munyoro. On Friday last week, at Karua Forest Hill during the national tree planting, Munyoro asked President William Ruto to help Murang’a county following being hit by many landslides that led to massive destruction of properties.

During the function, Muguru MCA Moses Muchiri called on the government to relocate the victims of floods and landslides from the school compounds and resettle them in social halls among other public facilities.

Muchiri said learning should not be disrupted as there was a need to relocate the persons to social halls near them.

“As the schools have opened, those provided shelter should be relocated,” said the MCA.

Present were majority leader Francis Kibe, MCAs’ Charles Karina, Alex Ndunda, Glady Wambui, and Gichobe Mbatia.
