Vihiga county department of Youth affairs and Sports has issued cheques worth Sh3.5 million to 13 sporting teams in the area. The teams qualified for financial support from the Sports Fund, established under the Vihiga Sports Management Act 2019.

Speaking during the exercise held at the county boardroom, Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo said his administration is committed to supporting and nurturing talent among the youth, a move he said had enabled them to participate in various sporting disciplines.

Dr. Ottichilo urged the young people to consider involving themselves in income generating activities such as agri-business for their socio-economic well-being. On his part, Chief Officer(CO) for youth affairs and sports Sylvester Kaane encouraged the teams’ management to explore other sustainability measures because of budget constraints from the county coffers.

Among the teams that benefitted include Vihiga queens Football Club (FC) that received Sh550,000, Bunyore Starlets FC a similar amount, Luanda Villa FC Sh500,000 while Vihiga granites, Mbale and Vihiga volleyball men and women bagged Sh250,000 each.
