Wives for hire warned

Local administration in Loitoktok Sub County has promised to crack a whip on ‘wives for hire’ and fake advocates involved in land transaction in the region. This is after it emerged that many families have undergone untold sufferings after land transactions going soar in the hands of wives for hire and fake advocates.

During a Court Users’ Committee open day forum in Kimana town, the participants lamented that husbands in the region were sidelining their wives and hiring women at Sh10, 000 to stand by as their ‘wives’ in the process of selling land. According to participants especially the women who are crying for government intervention and justice, the husbands are engaging the wives for hire since their wives would oppose them to sell their family land.

They called upon the advocates who are approached for land transactions to ensure they do thorough scrutiny of the documents presented to them as well as contacting area chiefs to confirm their validity in order to weed out these wives for hire and fake advocates

While responding to their sentiments, Loitoktok Sub County Deputy County Commissioner, Antony Maina called upon the residents to be wary while engaging services of the advocates by engaging genuine advocates and involve their wives for consent in land transactions.

The Sub County administrator said his office in conjunction with the court and LSK would organize public baraza to sensitize the members of public on processes of land transaction as well as urging them not be quick to sell their land. “It is of importance and in accordance to the law that family members should be involved in selling of a piece of land,” he added.

Maina also said the local administration is going to work closely with Law Society of Kenya to flush out and prosecute fake advocates operating in the sub county.

Loitoktok Law Court Resident Magistrate Nelson Gachuki said from the plenary interaction organized to sensitize members of public on accessing justice, there was need to sensitize the residents on their land rights and importance of seeking consent from their spouses when selling the land

Chairman Law Society of Kenya, Kajiado County Annest Githuka said a genuine advocate is registered with LSK and has identification card and practicing license renewed yearly.

Githuka warned those unscrupulous individuals running across the county purporting to be advocates their days are numbered adding that so far, his office has prosecuted three such individuals. He promised to work closely with local administration to weed out the fake advocates while urging members of public to be doing Advocate search with LSK to identify genuine advocates.

The forum which was sponsored by Hope Beyond Foundation, non-government organization which advocates for the rights of women and girl child in the sub county had brought together local administration, advocates, probation office of Director public prosecution among others.
