Farm to Market Alliance organisation has trained young mothers in Transmara region on various skills, including agri-business, kitchen gardening, bead making, and entrepreneurship skills. The goal was to equip them with knowledge and skills needed to generate income and support themselves and families.
Lewis Kilesi, the organization’s agribusiness coordinator in charge of the Trans Mara region who addressed the media after the training session, said that the program focuses on empowering young mothers to be innovative and enhance their skills.
Speaking at the Youth Centre Hall in Kilgoris town, Trans Mara West Sub-County where 60 women benefitted from the training, Kilesi said they also encouraged hard work and self-reliance among the participants. Kilesi noted the training aimed to address unemployment among women aged 18 to 35 years by engaging them in productive activities.
The program would help them explore income-generating opportunities besides encouraging them to come up with innovations,” Kilesi added. He said the training also inspires young women to adopt a positive outlook to life and shun dependency on others.
One of the beneficiaries, Violet Risa thanked the organizers saying she learnt valuable skills about starting businesses such as poultry farming, bead making, hairdressing, and general farming. Risa encouraged other participants to utilize the training they received to start new business enterprises to empower themselves economically.
Another young mother, Sheila Paranai echoed Risa’s sentiments, urging her peers to focus on income-generating activities to achieve financial independence.
She said young women possess boundless energy and potential to achieve anything in life. Young women are energetic and they can achieve whatever they want. Having a child is not the end of life, any young mother can achieve anything they want,” she said.
