Youth urged to use sports to guard against negative influence

Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, spouse to the Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, has encouraged youth in Laikipia to engage in sports for development and as a way to avoid the use of alcohol and narcotics.

Speaking at Nanyuki Stadium during a football tournament over the weekend, Mrs Rigathi noted that sports provided an alternative to negative influences to young people from substance abuse.

“Sports can be used in pure form to mitigate the challenges our young people face today, including the vice of alcohol and narcotics. Football possesses a unique ability to unite, to inspire and to provide a path towards personal transformation,” said Rigathi.

She revealed that football games held in Nanyuki involving about 32 teams’ participating under Dorcas Rigathi Foundation (DRF), Health Soccer Tournament, was an opportunity for young people addicted to alcohol and narcotics, to transform.

“This tournament is one of the ways we are using in rehabilitation programs, for those in addiction. It offers an opportunity for our young players, to break free from the chains of negative influences,” said the spouse to the Deputy President.

Laikipia Governor, Joshua Irungu, said that his Administration was keen on supporting youth on offering job opportunities and at the same time instilling skills of those who transform from drugs and substance abuse.

“We are united to transform the lives of our young people and see their talents are well developed, we are not going to relent, but continue supporting youth geared initiatives,” said Irungu.

Laikipia East Deputy County Commissioner, Patrick Muli, called for partnership from the youth in the fight against illicit brews, noting that alcohol had affected majority of people.
